Do you know about acupressure? Derived from traditional Chinese medicine, this manual technique consists of stimulating certain precise points of the body (located on the meridians, the “energy channels” of the body) thanks to the pressure of the fingers.
Good news: According to a recent study conducted by Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin (in Germany), acupressure is beneficial for women who suffer from menstrual pain. These are not rare: period-related pain affects between 50% and 70% of teenage girls in France according to Health Insurance.
To reach this conclusion, the German researchers recruited 221 participants, women aged 18 to 34 with regular period pain. These were divided into two groups: the first group benefited from a short training in acupressure and received a smartphone application allowing to target the 3 particular points to be stimulated. The second group was not entitled to it.
A natural solution for menstrual pain
Verdict? After 3 months, 37% of participants in the first group reported a 50% decrease in the intensity of pain felt during menstruation. After 6 months, 58% of the women in the first group were convinced of the effectiveness of acupressure. At the end of the experiment, the women in group 1 also consumed less pain-relieving drugs than the women in group 2.
“After the end of the study, two thirds of the women in the first group continued to use acupressure to act on their menstrual pain, note the researchers whose work has been published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Acupressure could therefore help some women to cope better with their periods … without harmful side effects. “Shall we get started too?
