Google has been the default search engine in Firefox for years, but that may change in the future. Mozilla is temporarily testing Bing as a replacement among a small number of Firefox users.
Google reportedly paid Mozilla $400-450 million last year to remain the default search engine in Firefox until the end of 2023. That is an important source of income for Mozilla. However, it is now being investigated whether Bing is not a better option. Who knows, Microsoft might pay a higher amount for it. In the Edge browser, this is of course already the default search engine.
The research is carried out on a small scale. Only 1 percent of all Firefox users notice the difference, which in practice amounts to about 2 million users. The test with Bing started on September 6 and will run until early 2022.
Choose by yourself
If you prefer to return to Google as your default search engine, you can do so via about:preferences#search (in the address bar and then Enter) or Settings, Search, Default Search Engine. For everyone, Bing is already in the list of available options, in addition to DuckDuckGo and Wikipedia. You can also add search engines yourself, such as Startpage.
