A study published in the medical journal Fertility and sterility will bring new hope to women who have undergone several miscarriages and fear that they will not be able to carry a new pregnancy to term.
In this study, researchers at Indiana University (United States) recruited 116 women who had already undergone at least two miscarriages before the 10th week of pregnancy. Their levels of nCyclinE, a molecular marker for endometrial health, were tested and those with abnormal levels were prescribed progesterone supplementation, in the form of an egg to be inserted into the vagina, twice a day. during the second half of their menstrual cycle. Then they continued to take it until the 10th week of pregnancy.
7 in 10 women have given birth to a baby
This supplementation seems to have been effective since in this group, 68% of the women succeeded in carrying a pregnancy to term compared to 51% of the women in the group without hormonal supplementation.
Researchers believe that progesterone caused the endometrium to produce more nutrients that allow the embryo to develop during the first weeks of pregnancy.
“We now know that prescribing progesterone in the second half of the cycle and then during the first weeks of pregnancy increases the likelihood of having a baby.” says Dr. Mary Stephenson, lead author of the study. “However there are many possible causes for miscarriages and women should undergo a thorough evaluation before seeking a prescription for progesterone from their doctor.”.
