26 women were inseminated during an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) by the sperm of a stranger, according to the press release from UMC medical center in Utrecht, centrally located in the Netherlands.
Utrecht University Medical Center is investigating a “procedural error” in its IVF laboratory. When fertilization of the eggs of 26 women, the sperm of another couple’s husband could be used. There is therefore a risk that these 26 patients have become pregnant with a man other than their husband.
IVF: what are the indications?
“During the period between mid-April 2015 and mid-November 2016, a procedural error was committed in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) laboratory”, explains in a publication UCM Utrecht. “It is possible that the sperm of another couple following the treatment ended up near the fertilization of eggs of 26 couples”, develops the medical center. As a result, “there is a chance that the eggs were fertilized by the sperm of a man other than the desired father. “
Unlikely, but not impossible
According to UMC Utrecht, it is unlikely that a woman is pregnant with a bad man, but this explanation cannot be completely ruled out. Half of the women concerned have since given birth or are pregnant. The hospital reported this procedural error to the health inspectorate and informed the 26 couples involved.
