September 27, 2007 – Almost half of women who exercise are said to have pain in their breasts. And that’s because the majority of bras, even those designed for exercise, are not suitable for physical exercise, a British researcher demonstrated.
As part of her work at the University of Portsmouth, researcher Joanna Scurr has recruited 70 women who she says represent “the widest range of breast sizes ever studied”.
According to his observations, the movements to which the breasts are subjected during physical exercise, even moderate, are much more important than what was previously believed. While bras are designed for a maximum displacement of 16cm, the British scientist has shown that the breasts can move 21cm during a regular exercise session.
Abused breasts
Regardless of the size of the breasts, the impact of movements on the breast would be the same. For women who wore a sports bra with an A cup, breast movement was reduced by 53%, and by 55% for those who wore a G cup. The results also show that no matter how hard the breasts are. exercise practiced, the breasts are abused.
In addition, bra manufacturers mainly only consider up and down movement. However, they neglect the lateral and forward / backward movements, clearly measured by the researcher.
A well-designed bra would relieve pain in women 80% of the time. In comparison, the drugs usually prescribed for breast pain are only effective 54% of the time and can cause side effects, says Joanna Scurr, who has a doctorate in sports medicine.
According to the researcher, poor support for bras discourages more than one woman from engaging in the physical activities that interest her. Until recently, there was little interest in this subject since sports medicine was mainly dominated by men, deplores Johanne Scurr who has found a formula to pique people’s curiosity. “When people ask me what I study, I answer that I am a specialist in ‘bouncing the breasts’ rather than saying that I am an expert in biodynamic breast,” she says. People laugh, but they always want to know more, she adds.
