The ecofeminist association Wecf France looked at three categories of make-up products used daily: concealer, BB creams and mascara. After analysis, she realized that despite the regulations in force, many chemicals continue to be used and pose a risk to women’s health, especially during pregnancy.
17 BB creams, 15 mascaras and 15 concealers were analyzed. These are only products whose use continued during the health crisis. “Of the 47 products whose composition we examined, we have identified 37 problematic substances. Of these 37 substances, we have classified 13 as being of very high concern, 9 of concern, and 15 of fairly high concern, 7 are endocrine disruptors of very high concern”, notes the association. It specifies that BB creams are the most worrying in terms of composition.
Endocrine disruptors to be avoided, more readable leaflets
Following these observations, Wecf France formulates requests on the prohibition of substances classified as “very worrying”, i.e. to forbid endocrine disruptors of these products. These are: benzyl salicylate, BHT, butylphenyl methylpropional, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, ethylparaben, methylparaben, octocrylene. It also calls for the establishment of a warning logo for pregnant women, or to make the labeling more easily readable for consumers.
Recently, a study pointed out that babies at birth already had endocrine disruptors in their body. Hence the importance of being very careful with the products used during pregnancy. Among the products tested, she specifies that bio-based makeup is saferbut still contains two things to watch out for: titanium dioxide and fragrance allergens.
