In the field of dental care, fee overruns are highly regulated. These are only authorized when the patient has a particular requirement (to seek treatment outside the opening hours of the practice, for example), if the dental surgeon has a “permanent right to exceed” or if the patient consults a stomatologist who practices in sector 2. In all cases, the patient must be informed, and an estimate must be offered if the estimated cost of the medical procedure exceeds €70*.
However, some dentists do not hesitate to charge exorbitant excess fees for (relatively) harmless acts. Thus, our colleagues from Figaro (who have investigated the subject) reveal that in the department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (04), this overrun regularly reaches €85 for a descaling. That is a total bill of €144. As a reminder, health insurance has set the “normal” price of descaling at €28.92…
“They are no longer getting by financially”
The phenomenon is not isolated: in this same study, we discover that in Paris, one out of two dentists invoices an excess of 27 € on average on 13% of the scalings carried out. And in the department of Hauts-de-Seine (92), 28% of dentists apply a supplement of €14, for the same procedure.
Asked by Le Figaro, Catherine Mojaïsky, President of the National Confederation of Dental Unions (CNSD), explains: “Some dentists are forced to break the pricing rules because otherwise they can’t get by financially. Some tariffs have not been revalued for 27 years. » To find out the prices of a dentist, go to health insurance website !
