It’s hard to believe it, but it’s true: in its latest epidemiological bulletin (published this Wednesday, July 17, 2019), Public Health France alert to the increase in the number of cases of gastroenteritis.
The authorities have recorded (on average) 93 consultations per 100,000 inhabitants in general medicine for reasons of acute diarrhoea: this is just above the epidemic threshold (set at 92 consultations per 100,000 inhabitants). Peaks were notably observed in Corsica (155 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), in Pays-de-la Loire (128 per 100,000) and in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (118 per 100,000).
Prevention, the best defense against gastroenteritis
Traditionally perceived as a winter disease, viral gastroenteritis (caused by a virus, therefore) occurs rather during the cold season. In contrast, bacterial gastroenteritis can appear all year round. Remember that the symptoms of gastroenteritis are: loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, very watery diarrhea, mild fever, headache and fatigue.
An epidemic of gastroenteritis in the middle of July? The health authorities want to be reassuring and remind them of the right preventive measures: wash your hands frequently with soap and water, frequently clean with bleach the surfaces that can potentially transmit the infectious agent (sinks, toilets, etc.) and not sharing toiletries (toothbrushes…).
