An iPhone’s camera is far from bad, but in terms of resolution, it was never really impressive. That’s going to change.
For a smartphone, an iPhone has quite a good camera that can compete well with the top. That sounds strange, because in terms of numbers that certainly does not seem to be the case. Where competitors often already tap the 100 megapixels, the iPhone 13 Pro still has a 12 megapixel camera. Apple mainly ensures that photos work well through software, but as with everything: higher numbers provide a better result.
More megapixels for iPhone camera
Those higher numbers are now also reaching Apple. The iPhone 14 will reportedly have a 48-megapixel camera. That’s what analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says. However, don’t expect every photo taken with an iPhone 14 (Pro) to enjoy higher resolution now. It is said to be a ‘hybrid’ system where the 48 MP camera is used when needed. For subjects where the 12 MP camera (the main lens) works fine, the main camera is used. Think especially of better lighting and filming as the possibilities for a 48 MP camera.
Periscope
An iPhone 13 has a camera island with three cameras: wide angle (0.5x zoom), normal (1.0x zoom) and zoom (2 or 3.0x zoom). With software-generated zoom you can get to about 5x zoom, but taking really nice pictures is not really possible with that. That may also change. The camera island of the iPhone 15, in 2023, would be accompanied by a periscope camera, according to Kuo. This lens is more common on Android phones and can handle much higher zoom levels. 20x zoom is suddenly no longer a problem.
It would be nice steps forward on a camera system that is already not bad. What the number of MP on the iPhone 14 will be remains to be seen until the phone is unveiled in 2022.
