The next Toyota Aygo could be available in an “SUV” version with the Cross suffix. Here’s what this little sister of the Yaris Cross could look like, combining the allure of an SUV with the handling of a city car.
The Toyota Aygo X Prologue concept car unveiled in March 2021 foreshadows the next Aygo, with a radical change from the two previous generations of the city car, since the model becomes a small urban SUV. Increased ground clearance, large wheels and roof bars thus characterize this prototype. A camouflaged Aygo 3 photographed last July seemed to do without these attributes. But an Aygo could hide another, and the little Japanese girl to come could well be available in a Cross version like her big sister the Yaris. Indeed the X of “X Prologue” forms a cross which is said cross in English.
From city car to mini-SUV
The Toyota Aygo Cross would therefore be distinguished from the standard model by its increased ride height, rims up to 18 inches in diameter and black plastic protections running along the side sills and wheel arches. This sidewalk walker, while retaining a reduced size, would offer the high driving position that has earned SUVs part of their success at a time when the commercial viability of the traditional city car segment is threatened.

The new Aygo will be launched in early 2022
Apart from their suspension, few technical elements should differentiate the future classic Aygo from its hypothetical Cross variant. The third Aygo of the name will be based on a shortened version of the TNGA-B modular platform and will be powered exclusively by a 70 hp 1.0 VVT-i three-cylinder petrol engine. It is due to be presented in the fall of 2021 with a view to entry into production in early 2022 at the Czech Kolin plant, of which Toyota is now the sole owner. Stellantis (ex-PSA) has indeed decided not to renew the Peugeot 108 and Citroën C1, which are still assembled there in partnership with the Japanese manufacturer.
