Seniors are happier overall than young adults, according to a study of 1,500 men and women in San Diego County, California. During of this survey, the researchers interviewed people between the ages of 20 and 99. All of the participants said they felt more comfortable in their lives and happier year after year, decade after decade.
And while young adults between the ages of 20 and 30 show significant levels of stress, as well as anxiety symptoms and depression, seniors present a real psychological well-being.
Well-being declines up to age 55
Old age is often associated with the degradation of the body and cognitive decline. But after analyzing the physical health, mental health and cognitive function of the participants, the researchers came to the conclusion “that well-being could be drawn in a U-shape: it declines from 20 years to around 45-55 years and then goes up again”.
This study confirms the work of researchers at University College London who affirmed a few months ago that the level of well-being improves in sixties.
