Argan oil has become familiar to us… However, it has long remained the beauty secret of Moroccan women. It is extracted from the fruits of the argan tree – a tree that grows mainly in the south-west of Morocco – by cold pressing the amandons (small almonds). “The Berbers used to apply this elixir on their face to protect themselves from the aggressive desert wind. They also consumed it to treat cardiovascular diseases.“ specifies Clémence Serot, pharmacist.
In the 2000s, argan oil gained new notoriety thanks to studies that highlighted its properties. Its production is mechanized, increasing the yield and promoting its use throughout the world. With its soothing and lipid-replenishing action, this oil is very popular with dry skin. “It is also the ally of mature skin, thanks to its revitalizing, healing and antioxidant action” , continues our expert. In addition, it protects the hair from dryness and prolongs the shine of colorings. Argan oil has thus become an essential ingredient in cosmetics.
Argan oil delays the appearance of wrinkles
Its fatty acids have an interesting action on the suppleness and elasticity of the skin, which can delay the appearance of wrinkles and strengthen skin firmness. They also stimulate cell renewal. “The vitamin E it contains protects against the damage of free radicals and preserves the quality of fatty acids », explains Clémence Serot. While the presence of sterols improves microcirculation, promoting exchanges and a healthy glow. In addition, these lipids limit inflammatory reactions, which accelerate aging, and exert a protective action against UV rays.
Finally, the rich texture of this oil is comfortable on mature, often malnourished skin. It can be used both pure and mixed with a cream.anti-aging to reinforce its nutritive power, and preferably in the evening, because of the light shiny film that it leaves on the surface.
Argan oil is effective against chapping
“Argan oil contains more than 80% unsaturated fatty acids, including 45% oleic acid (omega-9), which is found in particular in sebum” , specifies Clémence Serot. On the skin, it strengthens the hydrolipidic film and thus maintains good skin hydration. This fatty acid also improves healing: very effective on chapping and burns, it relieves tightness in dry skin. “With its 36% linoleic acid (omega-6), the oil strengthens the skin’s barrier function and preserves exchanges between cells”, she continues.
Hence the interest of applying it on dry and mature skin, but also on those without any particular problem to prevent aging. Finally, it is beneficial for colored or weakened hair. Applied as a hair mask on the lengths and ends or as a daily care product, it forms a protective film against aggressions.
