The paid service has been in the works for some time. Probably two years ago, since Durov was talking about this back in 2020. With the subscription, Telegram hopes to cover some costs associated with maintaining the service.
It is not yet clear which features we can expect from Telegram Premium, but it seems that the company wants to serve power users with this for the time being. Premium may cost $4.99 per month. This also removes the advertisements that you sometimes encounter in busy channels.
