‘Suspicious’ email from Google is legit
Google is currently sending out a mailing that looks a lot like a phishing email. But in this case it is a real one! So don’t be afraid.
The subject line of the email:
Help us protect you: Google security advice
It is said:
Your personal information is vulnerable because you allow your apps and devices to access your account in a less secure way. Disable this type of access and review other personalized security recommendations in the Security Checkup.
Experts have strongly criticized this email. It shows all the hallmarks of a phishing email: what exactly is wrong remains vague, but sounds alarming, you are sent to a login page, and the sender address sounds ”weird”.
Richard de Vere, security consultant, says the following:
“It has urgency, guides to a login page, quite vague, but alarming…we used to take legitimate Google emails and adapt, but this is just perfect as is. […] It’s that good,” he tweeted. “Unforgivable for Google to send this out en masse.”
According to Google itself, this mail is the result of months of testing, and this way they get the most clicks on the mail. That is perhaps most alarming, because it means that phishing criminals are apparently on the right track.
However… in this case there is nothing wrong! The email in question:
