To fight against stomach cancer, researchers have confirmed the protective effects of a diet rich in vitamins C, contained in particular in … potatoes!
Stomach cancer is the fifth cancer the most common in France, with 9,000 cases diagnosed each year. Its prevalence has clearly decreased over the past two decades, but mortality remains high with a 5-year survival rate, all forms combined, of 15%.
Scientists fromZheijang University, in China, are behind a publication that confirms that people’s eating habits can reduce the risk of developing stomach cancer.
According to the British newspaper The Times, they all particularly recommend eating “white vegetables” like cauliflower, or tubers like potatoes and turnips.
To reach these conclusions, the Times explains that the researchers reviewed 76 studies, involving more than six million participants. Of these, 33,000 people had died of stomach cancer.
Protective C vitamins
By focusing on the diet of the various participants, scientists show that “white vegetables” and tubers have a protective effect. In addition, they estimate that consuming a daily serving of 100g of fruit reduces the risk of stomach cancer by 5%.
According to them, this is because these foods, including potatoes, contain a significant amount of vitamin C. Their antioxidant effect protects the cells of the stomach. 50g of vitamin C consumed every day would thus reduce the risk of developing this type of cancer by 8%.
Unsurprisingly, the researchers stress on the other hand that dishes very high in salt and alcohol would be positively correlated with a high risk of cancer and mortality.
Findings which are not particularly new, but which have the merit of advising individuals on their diet, thanks to observations made on a large scale. And contrary to what one might think, potatoes have their place there.
