Sony just taps 300 grams off the current PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and no one knows how they managed that.
While the availability of PlayStation 5s is still a drama, Sony is already coming up with something new. According to Japanese game website Playstation Universe Sony has somehow made the PS5 Digital Edition 300 grams lighter. It is not yet clear how the console maker managed this.
Lighter PlayStation 5 Digital Edition
The website spot on the official Sony website a new manual from the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. This shows that all the features actually match. It has the same AMD processor, the same amount of RAM, storage space, GPU and so on. However, there is one difference, which is the weight.
The original weighed 3.9 kilos with stand while the new variant weighs only 3.6 kilos. Again, all specifications are the same, including dimensions and materials. It is therefore a mystery how Sony managed to tap off 300 grams.
PSU does note that the foot will be attached with different screws from now on. It could just be that different screws cause a slightly different weight. But it’s just different cups on the screw. Metal is metal, so it is implausible that 300 grams have been saved on this.
Whatever the underlying cause, Sony is already selling the renewed PlayStation 5 Digital Edition in the Japanese webshop. It is not clear whether this version is or will be widely available.
