The exuberant former mayor of Toronto couldn’t resist a relapse of liposarcoma. Rob Ford was 46 years old.
The former mayor of Toronto (Canada) died of liposarcoma. Rob Ford, an atypical politician, had hit the headlines with his populism and abuses of all kinds. Food, alcohol, crack … everything seemed excessive in this Conservative who had promised to return to the race for the elections for the Canadian municipality in 2018. He was 46 years old.
He led the city of Toronto from 2010 to 2014. Then a candidate for his own succession, he had engaged in drug rehab. However, he had had to abandon this re-election campaign to treat a first malignant liposarcoma. He had instead run for the post of city councilor.
Relapse and poor vital prognosis
These fatty tissue cancers are rare, concern patients aged between 40 and 60 years, and especially men (60% of cases). Metastases can appear in the lungs. They are most often located in the thigh, behind the knee or in the abdomen, and the tumor can reach 50 centimeters in diameter.
Treatment consists of surgical removal of the tumor, performed on Rob Ford last year. But these cancers are known for their high relapse rate, and the associated poor vital prognosis. The politician finally succumbed today to the second occurrence of cancer, located near the bladder.
