Retirement is excellent for health, according to the results of a study published in the medical journal Preventative Medicine. This period life favored better sleep, more physical activity and even thesmoking cessation.
Researchers at the University of Sydney (Australia) studied the changes in the lives of retirees and published a study which states that these senior citizens increased their physical activity by 93 minutes per week on average. And that they cut their idle time by 67 minutes.
“A major life change like retirement offers a great opportunity to make positive life changes. It’s a good time to let go of bad habits and create new, healthier habits.” , comments Dr. Melody Ding, in charge of the study.
Take the time to take care of yourself
During this period, scientists also observed that senior citizens slept better and 11 more minutes a day and taking charge of their health. 50% of retired women stop smoking.
“This is a good time to talk with the doctor about lifestyle changes to increase life expectancy,” adds Dr Ding. “These conclusions show that health professionals and decision-makers must think about the development of special programs for retirees, that they capitalize on their health transition throughout retirement”.
