Who is behind the organic consumer? The Nutrinet Santé study conducted by Pr Serge Hercberg, professor of nutrition at the Faculty of Medicine of Paris-XIII, makes it possible to better identify them. Organic food aficionados have on average a higher level of education than non-consumers. They are also more physically active but, contrary to popular belief, do not earn more money than others according to the results published in the publication Plos One.
Bio addicts eat more balanced
Of the 54,000 people questioned for this survey conducted by Inserm in collaboration with Inra, Cnam and the University of Paris 13, the “bio-vores” are also distinguished by a healthier diet. They consume 10 to 20% more vitamins and minerals, 30% more fiber and more omega 3 (20%), the antioxidant essential fatty acid. The plate of an organic addict consists of more fruits, vegetables, pulses, nuts such as walnuts and almonds and whole grains.
For 7 out of 10 French people, organic is better for their health
Their diet is closer to nutritional recommendations since they adopt a more responsible behavior by eating less fatty and sugary foods such as fast food, meats, alcoholic beverages, etc.
All these elements suggest that organic consumers are more concerned about their health and try to preserve it by choosing a healthier diet.
On the non-organic side, respondents justify their low appetite for organic by the cost, too expensive for 1 in 2 French people or by lack of interest. There the defenders of organic will retort that the organic products guarantee quality productsdevoid of chemicals and therefore better for the body.
But is it worth remembering? If there is one point where everyone agrees, it is the advantages of organic food. All consumers combined answer that organic products are healthier (69.9%) and more respectful of the environment (83.7%).
