Three adolescents suffering from narcolepsy after having received a vaccine against influenza A (H1N1) obtained offers of compensation ranging from 600,000 to 650,000 euros.
The pandemic Pandemrix * (Gsk) vaccine against H1N1 influenza is thought to increase the risk of narcolepsy, a rare sleep disorder characterized by fits of drowsiness occurring suddenly during the day. This was revealed in 2013 by a new Swedish study published online in Neurology. These results were identical to other British work published in the British Medical Journal (Bmj).
Between 600,000 and 650,000 euros
To repair this damage that they developed following a vaccination during the influenza pandemic of 2009-2010, three adolescents will be compensated up to 600,000 to 650,000 euros by the National Office for Compensation for Medical Accidents (Oniam ).
“These were exceptional cases, with significant compensation, up to the needs of these children who require assistance at least 3 to 4 hours a day”, told Agence France Presse (AFP) the lawyer of the three adolescents, Me Charles Joseph-Oudin.
In all, Doctor’s Daily reveals that Oniam has received 57 files in this case, and that 18 offers of compensation have already been made to date. 11 would have been accepted, while 7 remain unanswered for the moment. The average final compensation offered is 338,000 euros, but varies between 39,000 and 650,000 euros. “ It depends on the expertise that is carried out to assess the causal link, the extent of the damages, which can be very variable “, Explained to the professional site Erik Rance, the boss of the Office.
We therefore already know today that three of the 11 patients will receive the maximum amount of compensation.
As a reminder, in September 2013, the ANSM (Medicines Safety Agency) reported 61 cases of narcolepsy identified, including 56 in people vaccinated with Pandemrix, but also three vaccinated with Panenza (Sanofi) – reserved for infants, pregnant women and immunocompromised people – and 2 by unidentified vaccines.
