Wednesday, May 24, 2017, 2:45 a.m. A 26-year-old patient presented to the Nantes University Hospital (44) and requested psychiatric treatment from a nurse. This explains to him that the requested medication requires a prescription and that the patient must consult a doctor …
This reaction (however legitimate) unleashed a veritable surge of violence. The young man attacks the nurse, to whom he strikes a punch. She falls to the ground, but the patient does not stop there: he then kicks his victim (aged 34) in the head.
People present at the reception of the CHU try to intervene but the author of the violence flees … before being quickly caught by the security service of the hospital. He is now in police custody and will be brought before the Nantes Tribunal de Grande Instance (TGI). According to the authorities, the perpetrator is already known for acts of vandalism against a police station.
In France, 924 attacks on doctors in 2015
In a post on Facebook, the national police of 44 revealed that the nurse was sentenced to 5 days of temporary work interruption (ITT) following her assault. The victim plans to file a complaint.
In 2015, 924 “incidents” were declared in France by doctors to the Observatory of the National Council of the Order. 65% of attacks concern general practitioners and 35% specialists – especially ophthalmologists, occupational physicians, psychiatrists, obstetrician-gynecologists and dermatologists. While physical assaults and acts of vandalism remain in the minority (8% of cases), healthcare professionals mainly suffer from verbal assaults (69% of cases).
