Montpellier neurologists have developed a music therapy application. Three curves adapt the rhythm to the mode of care and the needs of the patient.
Music against the pains of the body and the spirit. Music Care has developed a music therapy application in partnership with Inserm. Used in particular by the CHU of Montpellier (Hérault), it offers different styles of music according to the tastes of the patients, as well as different sequences according to the needs.
A suitable rhythm
Music therapy is based on the technique of hypno-analgesia. The Music Care application is offered free of charge after a two-day training by a team of doctors, the list of which is available on the site of the device. In addition to the different styles of music, specifically recorded by big names in music, the application sets up different sequences that adapt to the needs of the patient. The U-system is indicated for pain management, the L-system preoperatively and the J-system postoperatively. At each of these sequences, the rhythm of the music varies according to a precise curve.
Less depression and anxiety
Music therapy influences pain by acting on reward circuits in the brain. It stimulates the production of endorphins and dopamine while reducing that of melatonin. However, these neurotransmitters are capable of modulating sleep, pain, but also anxiety and depression. Thus, the application claims to be able to reduce drug consumption and improve quality of life.
Published studies support this argument. In 2012, the Montpellier team showed a reduction in anxiety and depression in patients with fibromyalgia and low back pain. The drugs associated with these disorders were less consumed at the end of the study. The results were similar in Alzheimer’s disease, during work carried out in 2009. Anxiety and depressive symptoms fell by 62% on average.
