The National Health Security Agency (ANSES) carried out an expertise aimed at assessing the exposure of the population to electromagnetic fields emitted by new devices which make it possible to read electricity and gas meters remotely. After studying the associated potential health effects, ANSES considers that these “smart meters” are as harmless as a computer charger.
“Linky meters, whether in an electric or magnetic field, are at the origin of an exposure comparable to that of other electrical equipment already used in homes for many years (television, laptop charger, table induction cooking …) “ underlines the agency in a press release.

ANSES also stresses that exposure to electric or magnetic fields near water or gas meters is very low. “taking into account the low transmission power and the reduced number of communications (less than a second 2 to 6 times per day). Exposure due to meters is for example much lower than that due to a GSM mobile phone “.
