All it took was a post on social media from an American nutritionist to set the web ablaze. Some time ago, Dr. Daryl Gioffre, in the context of a discussion on constipation, mentioned the interest of a internal shower based on water, chia seeds and lemon juice.
Since then, social networks have taken over the information, even if it means distorting it. This internal shower would be adorned according to them with 1000 virtues, in particular that of making losing weight. So what is it in reality?
What are the benefits of lemon and chia seeds?
The composition of this drink, when you look closer, is made of plain water to which lemon juice is added. Mix in chia seeds which swell on contact with the liquid. Once swallowed, it would give an impression of satietyand would fill our stomachs, so much so that we would no longer be hungry.
“THE lemon juice has some health benefits. It is rich in vitamin C which, among other things, helps to combat fatigue. It is an antioxidant and it improves digestion. Chia seeds are rich in fiber, minerals, omega 3, and facilitate intestinal transit”, indicates Dr. Julien Scanzi, gastro-hepato-enterologist. So on paper, why not consume it.
The problem is that the properties of this drink stop there. And we do not see what would be miraculous in that. “That’s not how you’re going to lose weight. This can only be done with a food rebalancing controlled and adapted to each. And not a standard rebalance. Each profile is different and the diet must be adapted according to certain criteria : age, lifestyle, etc.”, says the doctor.
If it’s a drink that’s supposed to work wonders on constipation, why not. “You can also consume high fiber foods. The effect will be the same. They also facilitate intestinal transit. adds Dr. Scanzi.
Watch out for bloating
Let us add that no dose or quantity is recommended or specified most often in these tips which abound on the web, an excess can have side effects. Consuming too many chia seeds can cause bloating, or stomach aches for example for fragile intestines. An element not to be overlooked before following all the advice that we see on the Internet.
