In Russia they think it is and that’s why an official investigation has been launched into Netflix in connection with LGBTQIA+ themes.
If you watch a series of today compared to a series from the nineties or eighties, you might notice something. This trend is particularly noticeable in Netflix series. There is much more diversity in the characters. Netflix is an outspoken advocate of giving minorities a prominent role in series and films. In Russia, they are not happy about that and have now launched an official investigation into LGBTQIA+ themes in Netflix.
The Russian authorities are talking about propaganda when it comes to LGBTQIA+ in Netflix movies and series. In Russia it is the case that this type of content may only be shown to persons of 18 years and older. However, many Netflix series have an age rating of 16 years and older. The American streaming service is facing a fine of around 10,000 euros if it violates local law.
It will always be a dilemma for Netflix, as the service operates in more than 180 countries. All countries with their own culture and norms and values. Netflix has to pay close attention to what kind of content they make if they also want to broadcast the films and series in all those countries. Not every country, such as Russia but also China, is waiting for LGBTQIA+ films and series. (through Reuters)
