The mother of a baby born with four legs and two penises in Raichur (India) is reluctant to have him operated, despite the insistence of doctors.
On January 21, a baby unlike any other was born at 4:33 am at the Dhadeasugure medical center, in the city of Raichur (India), located south of Bombay. He was born with four legs, and two penises, during a perfectly normal childbirth, doctors said.
“For us, it’s a gift from God,” said Lalitamma, the 23-year-old mother of the newborn. Together with her husband, Chennabasava, 26, they have so far refused to consider an operation on the child in order to remove the supernumerary members. Lalitamma wants him to be brought up in exactly the state in which he was born. “We are poor and we cannot afford the treatment anyway,” she added.
A planned operation
Recalcitrant at first and under pressure from the family and nursing staff, the mother finally accepted that he be transferred to the Vijayanagara Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) in the nearby town of Bellary, in order to receive further examinations and to consider the idea of surgery.
“A team of surgeons are studying the baby’s condition,” says Dr Divakar Gaddi of VIMS. This case represents a real challenge for us ”.
Not a first in India
A little over two years ago, a baby was born with four legs and four arms in Baruipur, a city in eastern India. This exceptional birth had attracted thousands of people, who had nicknamed him “god boy”, the boy-god. The police had even struggled to contain the faithful who had come to pray and celebrate the birth of the baby.

In 2005 again, a girl named Lakshmi (named after a goddess) was born under the same conditions. Two years after her birth, she had been stripped of her extra limbs following an operation that lasted more than 27 hours.
