To help the victims of Hurricane Matthew, the Tulipe association, made up of representatives of the pharmaceutical industry, sent 260 kilos of medicines to Haiti.
The country seems cursed … Barely recovered from the terrible earthquake of 2010, Haiti is now facing a new humanitarian crisis. A week after its passage, Hurricane Matthew has already killed more than 1,000 people. As epidemics are looming, the French pharmaceutical industry is mobilizing. Via its association Tulipe (1), she sent the French NGOs present on the spot a first batch of drugs. “More than 350,000 people are still homeless and require emergency humanitarian assistance,” she said in a statement. An epidemic of cholera, dengue or zika threatens the country.
261 kg of drugs sent
261 kilos of drugs and medical devices, packaged in canteens were delivered Monday, October 10, through the NGO Première Urgence Internationale (PUI). These canteens were transported by a special plane chartered urgently by the crisis and support center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development. Two water purification stations and 60 civil security experts were also sent to Haiti.
This first donation of drugs is made up of emergency treatments (antibiotics, painkillers, anti-inflammatories, minor surgery, injectable drugs, etc.), pediatric drugs and basic treatments for adults.
A second expected donation
But the humanitarian aid of industrialists will not stop there. A second donation of medicines is announced during the week to the NGO AAIP (Aide Action Internationale Pompiers). “We remain attentive to the needs assessment and await the first reports drawn from the various exploratory missions of NGOs”, explains the association.
As a reminder, the Tulipe association has already intervened in Asia after the 2004 tsunami, in Haiti in 2010 and finally in Nepal after the 2015 earthquake.
(1) Created in 1982 by the National Union of Pharmaceutical Industry, the predecessor of the current Leem, the Tulipe association brings together donations from pharmaceutical laboratories and supplies drugs and health products to NGOs working in regions in crisis. ‘health emergency.
