To protect yourself against mosquitoes, there are a host of “grandmother’s tricks” more or less effective… and more or less eccentric: the diffusion of essential oils, repellent plants, sweet “traps”, DIY sprays based on garlic, basil, geranium, tomato…
However, according to health authorities, there are not 36 solutions to prevent mosquito bites: first, remove or empty all places and objects that can retain rainwater (flower pots, bins, gutters… ); two, install mosquito nets on windows and above living areas (above beds, around garden furniture, etc.); third, wear loose, covering clothing.
Mosquitoes are attracted to red-orange colors
Precisely: according to a study published in February 2022 in the scientific journal NatureCommunications and which is based on an experiment carried out on mosquitoes of the genera Aedes aegypti, Anopheles stephensi And Culex quinque fascias (vectors of diseases such as dengue or Nile fever), these insects would naturally be more interested in red-orange colors and black – which undoubtedly remind them of human skin. On the other hand, these mosquitoes would not be attracted to green, blue and purple.
To keep mosquitoes at bay, it would therefore be preferable to avoid red, orange and black clothing. Moreover, previous studies had already shown that mosquitoes were sensitive to contrasts: these insects would naturally be more attracted to fabrics with patterns than to plain fabrics. This can guide the composition of our dressing room as summer approaches!
