Are you having problems with HBO Max in the Netherlands? You may well not be the only one!
HBO Max may be packed with great content, but the use of the Netflix killer is not yet optimal. In fact, the streaming service has now been in the Netherlands for a month and a half and it is clear that there is still a lot of work to be done. These are the most common problems with HBO Max. And no, it’s not your fault!
HBO Max: Common Problems
Subtitles
- It seems like captioning (or lack thereof) is a very big deal on HBO. In the first place, not all content on HBO Max has Dutch subtitles. That can be a problem for many users.
According to HBO itself Work is underway to provide all existing content with Dutch subtitles. On the other hand, you could argue that content without localized subtitles is incomplete. HBO offers us a service that everyone should be able to use, even if they don’t speak English well.
- Another issue with the subtitles has everything to do with synchronization. HBO Max, like most streaming services, doesn’t offer a way to better align audio and text.
Pretty irritating, given that even English subtitles on legendary shows like The Sopranos don’t quite match what’s happening on screen.
Hitch and quality
- One of the other common issues with HBO Max in the Netherlands is the streaming quality and consistency of streams. When HBO’s servers seem to be overloaded, the play button may not work properly.
The same thing can happen during casting if the internet connection is a bit choppy; the stream controls sometimes just don’t work quite right.
- As an extension of this, it can happen that a stream stops regularly while the loading icon appears. This seems to be a problem especially when casting or watching via a smart TV. This can also be related to a mediocre internet connection, although the same problem apparently does not occur (so often) with other streaming services.
HBO not even available?
- To close the HBO Max issues, we also need to pay attention to the account and availability bugs in the Netherlands. By far the most Tweets to HBO Max NL consist of questions about this category.
Users seem to be unable to remain members of HBO Max in some cases. Also, according to an error message, the streaming service is not available to some users, while the neighbor can, so to speak, just watch.
teething problems
All in all, it’s clear that HBO Max still has some issues that need to be fixed over the coming months. Users who pay should simply be able to access their account. Dutch buyers must be able to watch content in Dutch. And the service must stream smoothly, which is by definition what a streaming service does.
Nevertheless, we have to be patient in part; any new service of this magnitude has teething troubles. Account issues are a good example of this. Because we received an unprecedented discount in the Netherlands, this undoubtedly took some special attention.
