In France, 54% of students have money problems: this was the conclusion of a survey conducted by the Observatory of Student Life (OVE) in 2013.
However, according to a new study from the University of Southampton (in the United Kingdom), these financial difficulties would have a considerable impact on their Mental Health. To explore this question further, British researchers followed 454 students (from different social backgrounds) during their first year at university.
Results ? “We have discovered a real vicious circle”, explains Dr. Thomas Richardson, main author of this work, published in the scientific journal Community Mental Health Journal.
“Students who experience financial difficulties are more stressed, more anxious and suffer more frequently from depression than the others, ”he adds. A result which is verified especially in women. “In addition, we have seen many cases of alcoholism related to financial problems – especially among men. All this generates new expenses … which worsens the financial situation. “
1 in 6 French students have considered suicide
Thus, in 2011, the National Union of Regional Student Mutuals (USEM) revealed that 20% of students were “excessive drinkers”. Worse: in the 2010-2011 school year, 1 in 6 French students would have had suicidal thoughts.
This study echoes the conclusions of the Observatory of student life: still in this survey published in 2013, the OVE explained that 37% of French students judged their state of “not, little or moderately satisfactory”. The students also confided their “exhaustion” (39%), their “isolation” (26%) and admitted having “sleep problems” (22%) …
