Launched during the Moi (s) Sans Tabac, the E-cig 2016 study was carried out in 4 Paris hospitals. It confirms the importance of finding the right level of nicotine and vapor to quit.
How to increase your chances of quitting smoking thanks to the e-cigarette. This is the question that the E-cig 2016 study, led by Prof. Bertrand Dautzenberg and the start-up Enovap, conducted in 4 Parisian hospitals and on 61 smokers, tried to answer. Carried out during the Ego (s) Without Tobacco, its authors confide in wanting to increase the chances of successful smoking cessation through pleasure and especially education. And they report the first results this Thursday.
Each study participant had to identify their vaping preferences: scent, vapor rate and nicotine concentration. With each puff, he had to indicate on a scale of 1 to 10 the feeling of satisfaction linked to the “throat-hit”, as well as the probability of quitting smoking. This study sheds light on a leading finding: identifying your optimal throat-hit promotes the urge to quit smoking. But what is the real importance of this term also called the “hit”?
“Throat-hit”, fundamental parameter
Convinced by the effectiveness of the product, Prof. Bertrand Dautzenberg explains: “It is about the satisfaction felt when the vapor passes through the throat. This feeling is important for the smoker who starts the e-cigarette, in order to obtain a feeling similar to that provided by the cigarette. It is therefore essential for each smoker to define the parameters leading to his optimal throat-hit, ”he concludes.
During the evaluation, the testers were thus offered several levels of vapor and several levels of nicotine through test puffs and were able to define which setting gave them the most pleasure. This study highlights a correlation: the greater the satisfaction in the throat (on a scale of 1 to 10), the greater the probability of quitting smoking. Old failures can therefore turn into successes.
At least 5.5 puffs to get to know each other
Faced with the confirmation of this data, scientists no longer hesitate to call on health professionals to identify the right settings for vapor and nicotine levels from the start of smoking cessation. On the right pedagogy to use, they estimate at 5.5 the number of test puffs necessary to find the optimal level of nicotine and vapor and thus increase the desire to quit smoking by 3.5 points out of 10.
At this point, for the participants in the study, the “expressed” probability of quitting smoking is 7 out of 10. But the scientists project themselves even further: “It would be interesting to know in a future study how this score would translate into a real rate of smoking cessation ”. The participants in the study put all the chances in their favor since their optimal weaning parameters were communicated to them at the end of the testing.
