A scientific study published in the ” European Journal of Clinical Nutrition Reveals that adolescent girls and boys were generally taller if their mothers drank more than 150 milliliters, about a quarter of a liter of milk per day during their pregnancy, compared to children born to women who drank less.
Previous studies had already shown that babies were more resilient and had better growth if their mothers drank milk when they were pregnant. This new research shows that these health benefits last into adulthood.
Nutrition experts from Iceland, Denmark and the United States followed babies born in the late 1990s. They analyzed the growth charts of babies born to 809 women in Denmark in 1988 and 1989, and put these results correlated with the amount of milk the women consumed during their pregnancy. They found that their height as a teenager was directly related to the amount of milk their mother drank while in the womb.
During adolescence, these same children also had higher levels of insulin in their blood, which improved their protection against type 2 diabetes. A British study also concluded that pregnant women could increase the IQ of their babies. and their reading abilities when drinking more milk, as this food is rich in iodine. Iodine is essential for the production of hormones made by the thyroid gland. It has a direct effect on the development of the fetal brain.
