Australian researchers have developed software that measures the writing speed and pressure of a pen on a page. It is enough to draw a spiral to determine early if a person has Parkinson disease. The speed and the pressure of the stylus during the roughing of a spiral are indeed less supported when one suffers from this disease, in particular in its severe form.
A drawing to avoid the language barrier
For this study, published in the journal Frontiers of technology researchers at the University of Melbourne asked 55 people (including 27 with Parkinson’s disease) to draw a spiral on A3 sheet. The speed and pressure of the pen were calculated and analyzed by the software to obtain their correlation with the severity of the disease. The choice of the spiral was made so that mastery of the language and education do not interfere with the results.
The objective of this work was to establish a reliable computer sketching method to assess the severity of the disease. According to Australian researchers, this test could be a springboard for new clinical trials for the diagnosis of the disease of Parkinson’s.
