Despite the presence of a hormonal IUD, an American woman gave birth to a boy. She posted a photo of her baby holding the IUD in her hand.
Lucy Hellein has kept a sense of humor. This mother from Fort Mitchell, Alabama, United States, got pregnant after having had a hormonal IUD implanted. She gave birth on April 27 to a boy, Dexter, holding the device in her hand.
The photo is of course a staging. During the cesarean, the obstetrician found the device hidden behind the placenta. A few hours later, the mother decided to make fun of the situation, and take this photo, already shared tens of thousands of times.
(Nice surprise
The woman and her companion, already parents, had decided to stop there. Lucy then decided to have Mirena, a hormonal IUD in principle 99% effective. Last August, she had her third device installed.
But a few months later, a pregnancy test revealed that she was 18 weeks pregnant! “My Mirena was nowhere to be found on the ultrasound, and my obstetrician then assumed he had fallen, although this explanation did not convince me,” she explained to the newspaper. Metro UK.
Far from taking offense, the mother adds that even though Dexter was “not planned”, she feels, like the rest of the family, incredibly lucky.

However, intrauterine devices are very effective. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends them for sexually active teenagers, because it would cause up to 20 times fewer failures than the contraceptive pill, patches or rings. The risk, as it must have happened with Lucy Hellein, lies in poor positioning, or displacement.
