A man had to be operated on after swallowing his dentist’s burr during dental treatment. The practitioner would have accidentally dropped it in his throat.
The story can evoke the scene of a horror film… It is however only a question of a medical accident, which, although marginal, could happen to everyone. A man swallowed his dentist’s strawberry.
The incident is recounted in the Respiratory Disease Review, in an article entitled: “Foreign bodies of dental origin: how to bring back the dentist’s burr? “
Mistreatment of the practitioner
The facts took place in Saint-Etienne, during a dental treatment carried out with the instrument so dreaded by patients. The dentist inadvertently dropped the fine point of the strawberry into the throat of a 59-year-old man. Housed in his back after a false road, the piece of metal could not be recovered by the practitioner.
Admitted urgently to the hospital, the man had to pass a chest X-ray, which made it possible to locate the unwanted object in his left lung. He had to be operated on as soon as possible, to prevent the strawberry from perforating his bronchial mucosa and thus causing internal bleeding.
Two pulmonologists from the North Hospital of Saint-Etienne University Hospital managed to extract the strawberry using an optical system and forceps. The patient has recovered well from the operation.
