The general practitioner from Cherbourg who had notably recognized the usefulness of the extermination of disabled people by the Nazis was condemned by the Order of Physicians.
Six-month ban on practicing, three of which are suspended. The College of Physicians of Lower Normandy reacted firmly to the remarks of Dr Jean-François Pion, a general practitioner from Cherbourg who, according to his disciplinary chamber, made statements “contrary to respect for human life, the person and dignity, as well as the principle of morality”.
He was on trial for having defended “the final solution” applied to people with disabilities. The facts date back to January 21, according to the newspaper Release. The Normandy Regional Health Agency (ARS) had requested its removal
Final solution
The Order had just been contacted by the ARS, whose director had expressed “serious doubts” as to the practitioner’s ability to continue to take care of disabled people.
According to the version of a nurse, who reported these remarks to the Regional Health Agency, the man would have shared, for 40 minutes, his opinion as to the final solution applied by the Nazis to homosexuals and the disabled.
In the office of the nurses of the specialized reception center (MAS) of the Glacerie (Manche), he would have explained that day that “the Nazis took individuals who were of no use in society”, adding that the experiments carried out on them had enabled them to be “useful”.
A weak defense
“If we speak intellectually, it’s logical”, would have estimated the general practitioner, who would also have explained not to understand “that we let” the disabled “reproduce” while sterilizing them would be “a good thing”. “Sometimes a good shot of cyanide and boom! “, he reportedly said.
The defendant’s defense is as murky as his words. Without denying the remarks, he had tried to minimize their scope, by advancing the “guilty silence” of the nurse who had let him rant, which he had interpreted as a “forced provocation”. His lawyer also tried to assert the private framework of the nurses’ office, which did not unduly move the disciplinary chamber.
Declining to comment, Dr. Pion recalled that other procedures were in progress. The general practitioner is indeed in the crosshairs of the civil justice, the parquet floor of Cherbourg having seized the file.
