Nine out of 10 women have at least two risk factors for cardiovascular disease, according to a study carried out by the association “Agir pour le Cœur des femmes”.
- 90% of women have at least two cardiovascular risk factors, according to a new study.
- 79% of respondents had no cardiovascular follow-up and 37% no gynecological follow-up.
- The lack of support for women’s heart health affects all socio-professional categories.
Since 2021, the organization “Acting for the Hearts of Women” goes to meet the fairer sex of the whole of France with its Bus of the Heart. This operation, which offers medical examinations and discussions with doctors and caregivers, has enabled her to take stock of women’s health. And the situation seems worrying.
Based on a panel of 4,300 patients aged 14 to 95 screened in coaches in 2021 and 2022, the study highlights insufficient management of cardiovascular risks in women.
8 out of 10 women have no cardiovascular follow-up
The program found that 90% of women who boarded the prevention bus had at least two cardiovascular risk factors. Even more worrying, nearly 8 out of 10 (79%) had no cardiovascular follow-up.
“The results of this study are much more alarming than we anticipated”warns Thierry Drilhon, co-founder ofActing for the Hearts of Women in a press release.
A similar finding is drawn for gynecological follow-up: 37% of respondents admitted not consulting a gynecologist regularly, while half of them had at least two gynecological-obstetrical risk factors. “Eight out of ten women are primarily concerned about the health of their loved ones and neglect their own. Two out of three postpone the moment of consultation and treat themselves alone, while they rarely miss a medical appointment for their loved ones”recalls Claire Mounier-Vehier, cardiologist and co-founder of the association, taken over by AFP.
Cardiology: prevention keeps the disease away
The study conducted across France shows that this lack of care affects all of the fairer sex. “Most women in socio-professional categories considered to be well off do not do more cardiovascular check-ups”, the statement said. Faced with these various findings, the association Acting for the Hearts of Women reminds that “in 8 out of 10 cases, the onset of the disease can be avoided thanks to prevention”.
The Buses du cœur resumed their screening tour for women’s cardiovascular diseases on March 8th. The 2023 edition includes 15 stages. The program is available on the organization website.
