In an article published in the daily “Le Soir”, the dentists of the Belgian Dental Society warn against the deleterious effects of cannabis on oral health.
While in France as in Belgium, the debate around the legalization of cannabis for recreational use has again been invited into the public debate following the opening of many “coffee-shops”, Belgian dentists are issuing the alert : Consuming cannabis on a regular basis can wreak havoc on oral health.
The THC content in question
Enamel staining, dental erosion, more cavities, more missing teeth, sensory disturbances, or even fungal infections and precancerous lesions… In Belgian daily life The evening, the Society of Dentistry warns cannabis consumers: “Many dentists have noticed the harmful effects of cannabis on oral health”, warns Véronique Seha, general dentist and lecturer on the impact of smoking. on oral health at the Respiratory Diseases Fund (Fares).
Based on studies showing that smoking a joint is more dangerous for the health of teeth than cigarettes, the specialist also specifies that “the dose and the duration over time of consumption (of cannabis) are aggravating factors”.
According to Belgian dentists, if cannabis is so bad for the teeth, it is because of its high content of THC or tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient contained in cannabis. Also responsible for its psychoactive effects, it would modify the oral flora, reduce the production of saliva, thicken the dental plaque and make it more sticky, which makes it more difficult to eliminate.
Consult regularly and at the slightest problem
To limit the reduction of immune defenses and thus delay the appearance of oral diseases, Véronique Seha gives advice to cannabis consumers: consult the dentist regularly and do not wait to make an appointment if they detect the slightest problem. “Any cannabis (and of course tobacco) smoker should regularly consult their dentist, who could inform them without judging, detect oral damage, treat it or even, if necessary, refer the patient to another specialist. It is important to create a relationship of trust to address this delicate subject and thus allow the consumer to discuss calmly with the practitioner.”
Cannabis is not the only one to deteriorate oral health: tobacco too. Not only does this deteriorate the health of the teeth, but it also increases the risk of losing them early. In 2015, a study published in the Journal of Dental Research established that smokers were 3.6 times more likely to lose their teeth than non-smokers.
