Tasty sweet and healthy snack
Good question! In this section PlusOnline goes in search of answers to nagging questions. This time: can you eat that white membrane, skin and the strings that are on a mandarin?
Mandarins are popular: the Dutch eat an average of four kilos of this citrus fruit every year. Not only are they deliciously sweet and healthy, but they are also handy to take with you as a healthy snack on the go. Only that white sheet or membrane is sometimes a bit difficult to get off. Sometimes you can do that for a while. But is it also necessary to get rid of it completely or can you eat it just fine?
Nutrients and Fiber
In itself it is not a bad idea to eat the white membrane and the strings. These strings contain – just like the segments – nutrients and fiber. It just tastes very bitter and is therefore simply not tasty. So you can eat it just fine, but do you want that?
By the way, you can eat almost all kinds of fruit with the skin and all, but it is better not to do this with the skin of mandarins. Tangerines are very sensitive to mold and are sprayed with an anti-fungal agent. If you buy mandarins in a net, this is always stated on the label. On it you can read exactly which resources have been used.
Scrub the peel clean
You can also use the peel – just like the peel of other citrus fruits – to process in dishes. So preferably use an organically grown mandarin or scrub the peel very well before using it.
