Blindfolded gamer completes Mario in record time

Completing Mario games as quickly as possible is a sport in itself. Some are so good at it that they like to make it a little more difficult for themselves. An American gamer does it with a blindfold and recently set a new world record.

For most people, Super Mario Bros. for the NES to play at all is quite a task. Let alone make it all the way to the finish without being able to see enemies, bottomless pits and other obstacles. Still, ‘Crescendo’ (online alias) succeeded and it took him 11 minutes and 55 seconds.

The world record for a normal Mario speedrun is 4 minutes and 54 seconds.

Crescendo practiced for about 40 hours before making an official attempt and broadcasting it on streaming platform Twitch. Because he sees nothing, he is purely dependent on his memory and also especially the sound effects from the game.

One of the most important weapons in his arsenal is the fireflower powerup. Fireballs make a sound as soon as they bounce back and this way Crescendo can still somewhat determine his position. Which doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s still a very clever trick.
