A young boy with Down’s syndrome lost his thumb, burnt alive, during a routine MRI examination at the Amiens University Hospital. The team allegedly forgot to remove a metal sensor from the boy’s finger.
A 13-year-old boy lost his thumb on Monday after an MRI at the Amiens University Hospital. When he came for a routine check-up to monitor his sick pancreas, Florian had his finger burnt to the bone, reports the Picard Courier.
The daily explains that this serious dysfunction was caused by the forgetting of a sensor calculating the pulse placed on Florian’s thumb. The magnetic field created by the MRI completely melted the device.
In the columns of the newspaper, the mother of the young child with Down’s syndrome, Fanny Barreiros, recounted this terrible incident: “My child cried out in pain. He suffered real torture. No one from the MRI saw what was going on besides forgetting the metal sensor. He destroyed my son’s thumb during the exam. I can’t digest it. I found Florian screaming in the recovery room hours after the accident. No one came to get me. “
The mother filed a complaint
Florian’s mother explains, however, that she had reported the presence of this sensor to the stretcher bearer before the examination. The latter then replied that the team of medical staff at the MRI would take care of it. She regrets not having removed it herself and is very angry with the anesthetist, the doctor present and the two operators who said they were sorry. A complaint was filed this morning with the public prosecutor at the Amiens court.
Placed on a drip for painkillers, Florian is now waiting for a transplant to rebuild his thumb.
