Scientists observed that as soon as rodents were put in touch with their congeners, they developed a strong social capacity, a keen sense of sharing and were particularly affectionate. As soon as the rats emerged from their isolation, their oxytocin levels increased. Which made them even more sociable and less stressed.
“We believe that oxytocin, released in the body after the stressful event, allows people to come together in difficult times”, explains Sandra Muroy of the department of interactive biology at the University of Berkeley, quoted by PourquoiDocteur. “This rapprochement promotes the creation of strong links, sharing, and appeasement of fear”.
