Several “serious faults” would be at the origin of the death of a young woman of 29, who had just given birth to her second child.
A hospital and two doctors appear in court for serious facts. The Bobigny court prosecutor requested a 20,000 euro fine against the Monfermeil hospital (Seine Saint-Denis), in which a 29-year-old mother died of a hemorrhage a few hours after giving birth by cesarean section. He also requested a six-month suspended prison sentence against the anesthesiologist and the obstetrician gynecologist, as well as a € 2,000 fine for each.
The facts, reported by the newspaper The Parisian, date back to July 8, 2012. The woman gave birth to her second daughter, and died of “massive internal bleeding, not detected, even though a place in intensive care awaited her”, specifies the newspaper.
“Accumulation of serious faults”
The judges noted a series of errors which led to the death of the young woman. This “accumulation of serious faults”, to use the terms used, constituted a particularly serious loss of opportunity, they considered.
Indeed, the legal experts questioned as well as the Regional Health Agency (ARS) interviewed, stressed that a simple “ultrasound would have been enough to remove the doubt”, reports the Parisian. The defense specified that the device “was broken”.
In France, the association for the defense of victims of medical accidents Le Lien estimates that in 2013, 50,000 deaths were attributable to medical errors, but no official statistics exist concerning this specific mortality.
