Nancy hospital was indicted two years after the death of a four-year-old boy, the victim of a medical error.
It was almost two years ago. In the spring of 2015, little Timéo, four years old, was admitted to the regional university hospital (CHRU) of Nancy (Lorraine) for leg pain. A few hours later, he died after receiving sixteen times the dose of colchicine that should have been given to him. Colchicine is an anti-inflammatory drug used in particular against gout attacks.
On Tuesday, the family’s lawyers announced the indictment of the hospital as a legal person, AFP reported. “For the family, this is a first step, but she believes that in the file there are enough elements to show the criminal offenses of certain natural persons”, they commented.
“Let it go”
For the mother of the little boy, at least three natural persons could be prosecuted in this case: the one who was wrong in the dose of colchicine, the one who prescribed him another drug that should not have been mixed with colchicine and the doctor on duty, who did not come when the child was seized with vomiting and diarrhea, she told AFP.
“Colchicine should be an extremely monitored product, because the difference between the lethal dose and the non-lethal dose is tiny,” insisted Timéo’s mother, who deplores “too much carelessness” in the monitoring of his son.
“The CHRU provides support to the civil party to ensure that events like these do not have to happen again within the CHRU,” said the hospital’s lawyer.
