The Ministry of Health has agreed to align the scholarships for nursing students with other college students. Their internship allowances will also increase by 25%.
These are “historic advances”, rejoices the National Federation of Nursing Students (FNESI). More than 15 days after the mobilization which brought together more than 5,000 students, the Ministry of Health agreed to standardize and align the school grants awarded on social criteria to nursing students with those of higher education students.
During the FNESI congress in Limoges, the head of the general direction of the healthcare offer, Anne-Marie Armanteras de Saxcé, also announced a 25% increase in internship allowances. Nursing students will thus see their weekly allowances go from 23 to 28 euros in the first year, from 30 to 38 euros in the second year and from 40 to 50 euros in the third year.
For the FNESI, these announcements have a taste of victory. They come to materialize “demands that the students have been making for more than 10 years, and on which it was until then difficult to envisage progress”, she explains.
Anesthetist nurses on the street
Although the members of the Federation welcome these great advances, they warn the Minister of Health that they “will remain vigilant as to their methods of application and their effectiveness”. And in the aftermath of major demonstrations by nurses, in particular nurse anesthetists, they stress that they will keep “in mind the difficulties that await them when they graduate” and will be attentive to improving the quality of life at work and the conditions of supervision of students on internship.
Degradation of working conditions, low wages, violence on the part of patients… There is great discomfort in this hospital profession. This Thursday, November 24, it is the nurse anesthetists who were in the street to demand recognition of their level of study BAC + 5 as well as an increase in their salaries. These specialized nurses are in fact paid 800 euros less than other professionals who also have a master’s degree. For now, the ministry has only proposed an increase of 50 to 90 euros. New proposals should be put on the table in ten days, according to the unions.
