Nice plans at Mercedes
We were already wondering this yesterday at the unveiling of the new Mercedes-AMG SL. Will there be a closed version of the SL? Or will there be a new GT? AMG’s Chief Technical Officer Jochen Hermann comes up with the redeeming answer: there will be a new Mercedes-AMG GT and it will only come as a closed coupé. A new GT Roadster will therefore not be available, because the SL has taken that spot.
“It wouldn’t make sense to have a GT Roadster in the future because it would overlap” [met de SL]’ says Jochen Hermann. Sounds logical. The Mercedes-AMG GT appeared in 2015 and in 2017 the car underwent a facelift. The new generation will therefore not take eternity.
Next-generation Mercedes-AMG GT is sportier
Don’t expect the first version of the GT to be as hardcore as the Black Series, but AMG assures us that there will be a noticeable shift towards sportiness. “The GT will be a very different car than the SL again, because even if you used the same powertrain layout or basic structure, you can and should make the GT an even sportier car.”
It sounds like it will also be built on the SL’s new platform: “It’s a scalable platform,” says Hermann. “The focus is now on the SL, but there’s more to come. If you’re developing an entirely new architecture, you obviously don’t do it for just one car.’
