Does the nurse have an MBO or HBO diploma? There is a law in the making that should regulate that you can quickly look it up on the internet. But the nurses don’t like this law.
Minister Bruins wanted to arrange with the BIG II Act that everyone can see on the internet how highly trained a nurse is. There would be two registers. One for HBO nurses and one for MBO nurses. The proposal is to give the HBO nurses the new name ‘directing nurses’ from now on. The law would come into effect in July 2020. That doesn’t seem to be happening, because nurses have serious objections.
The plan was not new, it had been considered for decades. In practice, MBO and MBO nurses often do the same work. At the moment only 10 to 15% of nurses are allowed to call themselves ‘directing nurses’. The other nurses will have to retrain, if they want to. Nurses who already have 25 to 30 years of work experience don’t think that’s fair. Young graduates would then have to say what they are allowed to do. It won’t be like that, appease the authors of the law. But the problem is not solved yet.
