Dark clouds over the fairytale world of Disney Plus. The streaming service comes with a cheaper subscription and makes you pay for advertising!
It seems to be a new trend for streaming services to offer cheaper subscriptions for their services, but with commercial breaks. Netflix is working on a subscription with advertising, and that is already common in America at HBO Max, Warner Bros and NBC Universal’s Peacock. Now it’s Disney’s turn.
In America they may be used to this, but in the Netherlands we are a bit like “we’re already paying for it, aren’t we?”. The USP of streaming services is of course the choice to watch what you want, when you want and especially for as long as you want. Pause when you run out of chips and go straight to the next episode if you MUST know how it ends. On the other hand, there are so many streaming services available that it can of course help to keep customers. You can have more subscriptions for the same amount of money. And that fits in with the Dutch nature, more for less. Perhaps you will take the extra commercials for granted.
We previously reported based on rumors that this was also coming for Disney Plus, but now the bullet is really through the church. The marketing guys and girls at Disney have come up with a new subscription plan that costs less, but gives you four minutes of advertising per hour. With films or series that last less than an hour, you will receive an advertising block with this subscription, reports variety based on a meeting of the American TV industry in New York.
No alcohol or politics
These meetings discussed what kind of advertisers Disney do and do not want to see on the streaming service. Alcohol or political advertisements are undesirable has already been made clear. We are curious whether that big yellow M is allowed to promote his cheerful meals between the Duck Tales and the Mickey Mouse Club.
The cheaper subscription would make its entrance in America before the end of this year, the rest of the world will follow in 2023. It is not yet known how much cheaper it will be, but it should be enough to ease the pain.
