– The good news
Number of Covid-19 patients in critical care wards continues to decline. Public Health France has 1,032 serious cases in hospital, 45 less than the day before. This figure has not fallen below 1,100 since September 2020. A month earlier, this figure climbed to more than 2,500. A total of 7,637 people are hospitalized with Covid-19, a declining number since two months. Yesterday, 35 people died from SARS-CoV-2 infection. The positivity rate remains very low, although it is rising slightly, to 0.9% – on average over seven days – after falling to 0.8% for 10 days.
The number of first appointments for vaccination against Covid-19 is experiencing a slight rebound. This Monday, the Doctolib site recorded an increase of 40% compared to the previous week. This increase has been confirmed over the last few weeks since the last two have seen a rebound of 10% to 20% in first injections.
Yesterday, appointments for a primary vaccination increased by 40%!

A treatment that reduces the risk of death confirms its effectiveness. Tocilizumab, a monoclonal antibody usually used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, would reduce this risk by 17%, says a meta-analysis carried out on nearly 11,000 patients and incorporating the results of 27 clinical trials, published on July 6 in review JAMA Internal Medicine. In the wake of this publication, the WHO gave the green light to the use of this treatment.
– Reasons to worry
The incidence rate continues to rise with 11 regions seeing the epidemic start again. This indicator, corresponding to the number of positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the past week, has increased in more than half of the departments and by 29% in one week across the whole country. Île-de-France and Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur are the two most affected. In Paris, the threshold even rose above 50, which represents the “alert threshold”.
The Delta variant continues to grow and is about to become the majority in the country. It currently represents around 40% of new infections, revealed Gabriel Attal, the government spokesperson, this Wednesday during a press conference.
Faced with the situation, a new defense council is scheduled for Monday, July 12. The executive is working “to all possible scenarios”, conceded the spokesperson. The latter did not give any indication of the implementation of possible new restrictive measures, but reinforced border controls are mentioned. In addition, Emmanuel Macron must speak by July 14 to discuss the end of his mandate and could take the opportunity to make new announcements.
