Nicolas Dupin, president of the French Society of Dermatology, and Serge Dahan, president of the Group of Aesthetic and Corrective Dermatology (gDEC), alert on the development of wild and dangerous practices of cosmetic surgery.
- Hyaluronic acid is the flagship moisturizing molecule for smoothing out dehydrated and crumpled skin.
- Botulinum toxin, often called Botox, is a product intended to correct certain facial wrinkles.
While many influencers from reality TV continue to modify their faces with injections, doctors want to alert the general public to dangerous practices in aesthetic and corrective dermatology.
Hyaluronic acid: do not buy it on the Web
“At a time when we see wild and dangerous aesthetic practices flourishing, the French Society of Dermatology (SFD) and its group of Aesthetic and Corrective Dermatology (gDEC) recall that it is essential that these treatments be practiced by doctors with training and a good knowledge of the anatomy (nerves, vessels, muscles, etc.) of the face”, write dermatologists Nicolas Dupin and Serge Dahan in a press release.
These experts strongly advise against the purchase on the web and in pharmacies of ampoules of hyaluronic acid, of which we know neither the origin nor the composition. They also remind you that it is forbidden to inject yourself, friends or non-physicians with hyaluronic acids and botulinum toxin (better known as “botox”).
Cutaneous nodules and necroses
The risks are indeed significant if the injections are performed by untrained people: nodules, infections, skin necrosis and even blindness if an embolism of hyaluronic acid passes through a vessel. The same goes for other aesthetic dermatology techniques: “botulinum toxin can only be injected at very specific points, peels must be applied with caution to the skin to avoid any burns and possible sequelae, and lasers and related technologies (pulsed lamps, cryolipolysis, ultrasound, etc.) must be carried out by expert hands to obtain the best results, taking care to avoid side effects”, explains the French Society of Dermatology.
And to conclude: “one can only entrust one’s face or body to expert doctors who will inject certified, good quality products, and will perform aesthetic or laser procedures after initial and continuous training”.
